Miley Cyrus Said Something That Made Me Stop and Think

25 July 2026 by Paulina Bonsu Donkoh

I know this Miley Cyrus interview with Monica Lewinsky is just resurfacing on the internet, although it’s been a year since she did it. However, I feel this part of the interview is worth highlighting and talking about.

In an interview with Monica Lewinsky on her podcast, Reclaiming with Monica, Miley Cyrus talked about how her past affected her and her family’s lives.

“There were times when my brother and sister didn’t go to school because of how humiliated they were to be related to me.”

Miley is one of the most influential celebrities I’ve seen demonstrate accountability with poise and humility.

I think it takes some level of courage and maturity to admit this on the internet, in front of millions of people who are constantly passing harsh judgment based on what you share. For her to acknowledge how certain choices she made impacted the people she loves shows how much she has matured. I’ve always said, “It’s only a fool who doesn’t change with time.”

The Part That Touched Me the Most

“I lost everything during that time in my personal life because of the choices I was making professionally. My relationships fell apart. I was engaged at the time. That didn’t work out because the fact that I would, you know, pose nude or dance in very little clothes or show my body was making them feel like I was taking something away that was meant to be for them. So I would have a really hard time dating. And it was just, it was really hard. It was really hard for me to go home and see my dad and look him in the eyes and not feel super embarrassed. Going home and seeing my grandparents was just mortifying, you know, or Thanksgiving with my family.”

Sometimes, it’s easy to say you’re living life for yourself and not care about what people feel or think about it. But at this moment, it’s safe to say: do what you will, but don’t forget that the people around you will also be affected by the choices you make.
