How do you win the war in your mind and pull yourself together to succeed?

15 March 2025 by Paulina Bonsu Donkoh

There’s a war we are always waging in our minds, a battle we’re constantly failing to win. This battle drains our energy and willpower to succeed, eventually leading us to admit defeat. This war is so familiar to us. It haunts us in our sleep and when we are awake. The feeling is brutally painful. It can make you feel paralyze you for days.

The worse feeling

And, what makes it worse is that few people seemed to have won their mind battle already. They are always crushing it, making you wonder if you were made to be the way you are. You are always scared to death that you might not win your war, succeed, and eventually be happy. Just like everybody else who has succeeded.

Close your eyes, and put yourself in this scenario. “I desire to be one of the best public speakers in the world. To be one of the best speakers I need to conquer stage fright and practice in front of an audience. I attempted it for the first time but it didn’t go well. It was horrible.”

“My hands, legs, and voice shook so badly. The audience’s eyes mercilessly judged me as incompetent. Because of this unfortunate incident, I never attempted public speaking anymore. Anytime I try, I remember what happened. I start doubting myself in my mind. Feeling scared and incompetent, I vow never to try again. Yet I hate myself for failing to do it.”

In another scenario, “I am tired of working for people and want to start my own business. But I fear I won’t succeed alone with no one to validate my effort. The voice in my mind keeps telling me I won’t make it. With my family depending on me to survive I can’t risk it, too. So, I continue working but dread each day I go to work. It’s okay anyway. People don’t like me and I don’t think they will patronize me even if I try.”

Silencing the voice in the head

Can you relate to the scenarios above? Not the exact situation but with the intention of it.

  • You want to take the next of your life but you’re afraid it might not go so as planned.
  • The voice in your head keeps saying you’re not enough; that you’re a failure.
  • You’ve mastered the courage to begin something yet you’ve lost the willpower to continue.
  • You’re in a mind cage, wanting to break free. What do you do?
  • Can you silence the voice in your head?

Here is the thing. Many people have spoken much about silencing the voice in your head completely but is it possible? No! The unpleasant truth is that you can never silence the voice in your head. You have to train yourself to resist it.

Resist the voice say’s:

  • You’re not enough.
  • You won’t succeed even if you try.
  • You’re tired, tomorrow you will continue.
  • People will mock.
  • You’re a failure.
  • You don’t deserve to be happy.
  • Give up already!

You can’t silence the voice but you can resist it by taking control and taking action.

How do you pull yourself together to succeed?

  • Do a self-audit. Get yourself into a quiet space, sit down, and assess yourself. Ask yourself these questions; Who are you? Are you satisfied with yourself? What have you achieved so far? What do you want to gain in the next two to three years? Just do this assessment to better understand your current self.
  • Do a Mental Time Travel. Simply put, mental time travel is when you use your mind to imagine yourself in your past or future. So you put yourself in the memories of your past and observe everything you did, how it affected your life and the experiences you got. You can also envision yourself in the future. Living your ideal successful life in your mind.

You do a mental time travel into the past and consider who you are in the present. You also do a mental time travel into the future to inform your decision-making and take actions to become the future you desire.

Take Action

  • Set Goals. Setting goals provides clarity and gives you a sense of direction. You must set SMART goals. Your goal must be specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and time-bound. Goals get in motion. It fuels your actions and gives you clarity on what you want to gain or succeed.
  • Get into a routine. For you not to procrastinate or feel reluctant, get into a routine. Plan how your day is going to be. Plan the activities you’d like to do in a day. Let those activities reflect your goals. Start doing the things that will let you achieve all your set goals.
  • Have a positive mindset. As humans, we’re always tempted to entertain negative thoughts when things are not going as expected. That’s when we give power to that voice in our heads that says the plan won’t be successful. But when you adopt a positive mindset, believing that you can do it even when it gets tough, everything will work out for your good. You can do it! You are enough!
  • Maintain a gratitude spirit. This part has helped me a lot. Maintaining a gratitude spirit helps you to appreciate yourself. It helps you to acknowledge the little things you’ve achieved so far amidst the chaos and ‘failure.’ It also helps you to be grateful for the important things. It keeps you moving forward.

Pick up yourself

Believe that you too can sit at the table of successful people. You have to believe that you can win the war in your mind and pull yourself together to succeed. There are two types of people. Some wish that they could do something. And others get it done. It isn’t that those who get it done don’t feel fear, or have ‘the voice’ in their head condemning their actions.

On the contrary, they do. You just have to feel the fear and do it anyway. So, today, I’m daring you to do that one thing you’ve been afraid to do. Take the step! Take the action! Care less about what people will say or might do. If it will make you feel good, just do it. Period!

I’ve had a book concept that I wanted to write for a long time. But I feared it wasn’t good enough to publish. You know what, I’m going to take a bold step. I’m writing a paragraph or two today. What do you want to do? Let me know in the comment section. God bless you. Much love.
