Grateful spirit: I’m surely thankful for this one thing!

6 July 2024 by Paulina Bonsu Donkoh

You may not know what to be grateful for until you see the value of it.

I nearly died my dear! It’s no joke

It was quite an experience. I nearly died!

Do you realize that when you are on the verge of dying everything else doesn’t matter?

If only you’ve experienced that before?

You don’t even remember the biggest problem that’s been haunting you for years or days!

Ha! You should see me shouting now as I type this. I’m speaking from experience oo.

The reality of life

I mean when something just snaps out of nowhere and threatens your life, all you do is try to survive. Your mind shifts into survival mode- “Oh! If I could get out of this alive I would be grateful.” Forgetting a moment before, all you felt was, “Everything would be better if it all ended right now.”

You probably thought you meant it when you were saying it in your head. But when when the moment came, survival was the only thing you wanted.

The funny thing is, the life-threatening incident could be as ‘little’ as choking on food. Some time ago I saw a meme on social media about how hot banku stuck in your throat can kill you( not literally but you will suffer if don’t have cold water sitting on a table somewhere).

It was funny given that I believe most Ghanaians, including me, have experienced that ordeal before.

This incident made me appreciate life more

Now, to the incident that nearly killed. Hopefully, it was not hot banku stuck in my throat. But it was worse than that.

I was eating yam and beans stew when suddenly I remembered something I needed to ask my husband. So I picked up my phone, dialed his number and placed the call.

If you had seen me eating, you could easily tell I was really enjoying the food. I kept filling my mouth full. My husband answered the call and we were talking. While we converse, I kept on shoving the food into my mouth like an orphan girl who had been starved for an entire week as a punishment for her disobedience.

When I was about saying important, with the food in my mouth, bits of the yam and bean accidentally entered my nose. All of a sudden I couldn’t breathe, I couldn’t speak. My eyes were popping out of their sockets. I probably looked like Rango being choked (if you’ve only seen that cartoon before).

I threw the rest of the food in my mouth out while coughing, sneezing, doing everything I can to get the food stuck in my nose out. The worse part was not being able to breathe through my nose. The pepper in the food also stung my nose so bad.

It felt like that was the end. Until I realized I could breathe through my mouth to save myself. Immediately, I opened my mouth so wide and sucked in as much air as possible. It took a while for the pieces of yam and beans to get out of my nose, but I survived. I surviiiiiiiiiived!

I’m grateful for life

Oh how glad and grateful I was to be alive. Immediately, I thought, if there were ways humans choose to die then that experience would be blotted out quickly.

After everything was back to normal, I realized that I didn’t even think about all the problems I was dealing with. Trust that I’ve been through a lot I can’t share right now. None of my current problems and the emotions I’ve felt from those problems came to my realization.

I realized that no matter how big my problems were, I was indeed grateful for this one thing, life. You wouldn’t appreciate life so much until someone or something tries to take it away from you.

If I have life, then there’s a possibility of overcoming and conquering all my problems, and fears. I have the chance of running the race again, figuring everything out as I move on. When I’m dead, everything comes to a halt, but when I’m alive everything is in motion again.

My dreams, my life-long plans, my family, seeing my loved ones, pursuing my purpose, everything that has to do with me is in motion again.

God is life

You know something, I run by one thing: my life revolves around God. God is life and everything revolves around him. If I have life then it’s because he has generously and graciously given me that life.

And him being the life is the light to all possibilities. That means with God steering this life of mine, no matter how big my problem is or how irrelevant my life may seem right now, I’m relevant, I’m useful, I’m a conqueror, I’m a survivor, and I’m an overcomer. Everything is working for my good.

I have life(God) that means there’s nothing I cannot do.

Be grateful for life

My dear, I’m sure you agree with me now that the one thing we should be grateful for is life. If we have life, we can be world changes. So no matter the circumstances, whether failures or illness, providing you have life, wait patiently for what tomorrow will bring.

Life is precious! Life is a treasure! Life is priceless.

Why don’t you share with me in the comments section below your experiences with life, and the things you’re grateful for. I’m sure others who read it will express their solidarity.

My dear, I’m grateful that you, too, have life. Sending my love and prayers to you! We move! God dey!
